In October and November there occurred the two major Hindu festivals of Durga Puja and Diwali, the festival of lights. Among other things both festivals require the offering of sweets. At MAITRI they were both celebrated for two days although the major event for us was certainly Diwali, when we decorated the stupas and other buildings with strings of lights and at night we all together, i.e. staff and inpatients, lighted 1,080 lamps positioned throughout the campus. Earlier in the day the director had offered clothes and sweets to the inpatients.
