{"id":82,"date":"2018-01-10T07:09:35","date_gmt":"2018-01-10T07:09:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.maitri-bodhgaya.org\/home\/?page_id=82"},"modified":"2018-01-10T07:09:35","modified_gmt":"2018-01-10T07:09:35","slug":"the-facts","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.maitri-bodhgaya.org\/home\/leprosy-program\/the-facts\/","title":{"rendered":"The Facts"},"content":{"rendered":"<table border=\"0\" width=\"100%\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<h6>LEPROSY PROGRAMME<\/h6>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.maitri-bodhgaya.org\/images\/stories\/bcartap.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nMap of district with development of MAITRI\u2019s work<\/td>\n<td><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\"><strong><br \/>\nLeprosy : the facts<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One new case of leprosy is reported every 40 seconds<\/li>\n<li>Hansen\u2019s disease can be completely cured &#8211; fact.<\/li>\n<li>Leprosy is caused by the bacillus mycobacterium leprae, which creates changes to nerves.<\/li>\n<li>Untreated leprosy can lead to hand, foot and eyelid nerve damage and crippling deformities, like &#8216;claw&#8217;\u00a0hand, &#8216;drop&#8217; foot and blindness.<\/li>\n<li>Hansenians can be cured with six to twelve months of uninterrupted drug treatment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Leprosy : the signs<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An early symptom is often a small, light-coloured patch on the skin<\/li>\n<li>The inability to feel touch, heat or pain in the affected areas<\/li>\n<li>Enlargement or tenderness of peripheral nerves, associated with signs of nerve damage, such as\u00a0sensory loss in those areas<\/li>\n<li>Paralysis and wasting, especially in the hands and feet, resulting in deformities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Hansen\u2019s disease : the cure<\/strong><br \/>\nS E T<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Survey of the population (discontinued in 2002) : Early detection of the disease is essential in\u00a0order to avoid permanent nerve damage and deformities;<\/li>\n<li>Education (continuing) : Awareness of the facts, the signs and cure for leprosy amongst the\u00a0population;<\/li>\n<li>Treatment (continuing only at PHCs since 2002) : MDT &#8211; Multiple Drug Therapy, a combination\u00a0of the anti-leprosy drugs rifampicin, clofazimine and dapsone<\/li>\n<li>Physical rehabilitation of patients who have developed deformities\/disabilities \u2013 Rehabilitation\u00a0(continuing).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LEPROSY PROGRAMME Map of district with development of MAITRI\u2019s work \u00a0 Leprosy : the facts One new case of leprosy is reported every 40 seconds Hansen\u2019s disease can be completely cured &#8211; fact.
